The straight lines of the jambs and the header are softened by the rounded flutes of the frieze. These carved flutes uphold the tiered shelf and contribute to the elegant, mid-eighteenth-century form of this chimneypiece. Carved from Paonazzo marble, the architectural design of the Briggs is lent gravity and presence.
